Rogue Hair become the first Irish team EVER to win the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy

Rogue Hair from Belfast has won hairdressing’s most coveted industry award, the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy. The culmination of the team’s three‐month competition journey came to a heady conclusion on Monday 1st June at Earls Court 2 when salon owner Jody Devlin and wife Karen were crowned king and queen of the catwalk at a star‐studded industry event.

Despite facing tough competition from twenty‐one salons from around the UK, the team produced a look that was quite simply, unbeatable. They proved to the judges that they had their fingers firmly on the pulse of fashion by presenting a stunning copper bob with sharp geometric lines inspired by architectural shape and form. “We feel that our look encapsulates the future of hairdressing and will be one of the most indemand hairstyles of 2009,” predicts Jody.

Over 1,300 of the world’s top hairdressers gave a standing ovation as Jody and Karen collected their award from the evening’s suave presenter Gethin Jones and Mr Vincent Mercier, Managing Director L'Oréal Professional Products Division UK. Speaking moments after they came off stage, it was clear that the enormity of their achievement would take some time to sink in, “We’ve been working towards this moment for so long, it’s hard to comprehend that we have actually won!” said Karen. “Nobody can remember a time when an Irish team has taken the overall title in the 54year history of the competition. We have made history with this win and are delighted to be bringing this award back to Belfast.”

Talent, drive and determination saw them through three tough rounds of the competition which started way back in March. Over 1,200 salon teams entered, 358 Regional Finalists were short‐listed; with just 28 finalists selected to show their looks at the Grand Final.

Under the brief ‘hair inspired by fashion’ competitors spent two and a half hours colouring, coiffing and styling their model to perfection before a host of hairdressing legends were brought in to judge their work. Hair Gods Richard Ward, Charles Worthington MBE and Errol Douglas MBE were among the panel of industry peers deliberating over who should be the winner.

Unaware of their fate, the competitors and their supporters made their way to the spectacular Grand Final at Earls Court 2 to experience total glamour, total sophistication and total inspiration – the very best of British hairdressing. The team watched with pride as their model stepped out onto the catwalk and throughout the evening there were stunning artistic shows by Jason and India Miller for Charlie Miller and the Haringtons Art eam.

As the competition headed towards its dramatic conclusion, Jody and Karen experienced their first taste of success as they were announced winners of the Northern Irish region. But the tension did not relent until second and third place had been revealed, leaving just one magical opportunity hanging in the balance. When the team heard their name called, there was a split‐second of utter disbelief as they realised they had done it. Rogue Hair had won the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy!

The judges agreed that the talented team had met the brief to reflect Autumn/Winter 09/10 trends as set by L’Oréal Professionnel as Charles Worthington explains; “Rogue Hair showed that they possess true hairdressing vision and creative talent – essential ingredients for a winning L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy team. Their look was original, beautifully executed and worked in perfect harmony with the clothes styling. It met the brief with razorsharp precision.”

Rogue Hair will now begin their year‐long journey as winners of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy. They will participate in numerous photo shoots, including one for top fashion style‐bible Vogue, and will be whisked off across the channel to experience Inspiration Paris, a three‐day hairdressing symposium organised by L'Oréal Professionnel. It’s clear that hey are relishing the opportunities that lie ahead as Karen explains. “This success means so much to the salon and will be a fantastic boost for business and for team motivation. It’s clear that 2009 will e a very busy year indeed.”
